AAPC saves $200,000 annually with SecuriSync file backup and sharing
Precise and accurate medical coding is imperative when it comes to protecting revenue flow, and essentially every aspect of record keeping. AAPC provides comprehensive training, certification, and continuous education to protect patient care, billing, insurance claims, regulatory compliance, and reporting.
AAPC is the largest training and credentialing organization for the healthcare industry, in operation since 1988 with over 155,000 individual and corporate members. Needless to say, this is a prestigious title to have, but it comes with its fair share of challenges. When Brain Shellabarger, Chief Technology Officer, joined AAPC, he saw the need to modernize AAPC’s operations.
Shellabarger stated, “I saw we had an opportunity to use the cloud for our file management and improve operations – to begin to move off file servers, facilitate better sharing of files within the company and with business partners, and also backup data being stored directly on employee’s PCs.”
AAPC needed a file management system that could deliver:
- Cloud-based backup for all computers
- File transfers with outside vendors and contractors for the appropriate exchange of Protected Health Information (PHI)
- The ability to track sharing events
- Access to files stored in the cloud from their mobile devices
Additionally, there were two common security challenges of concern to Shellabarger: 1) lost/stolen devices and 2) ransomware. Plus, as a healthcare organization, AAPC had to comply with HIPAA, so Shallabarger needed to find a vendor that would sign a Business Associate Agreement (BAA).
SecuriSync raises the bar on secure file management
Shallabarger jumped on the opportunity to introduce SecuriSync® by Intermedia to AAPC’s 300 employees. Key decision factors were SecuriSync’s real-time backup and point-in-time restore capabilities. And, like nearly all Intermedia services, SecuriSync is able to help facilitate HIPAA compliance. Having that signed BAA contract gave Shallabarger extra peace-of-mind.
“SecuriSync checked all our boxes and more. It combines both backup and file sharing together in a solution that’s easy for employees to use, but also includes the security and protection features that we required,” says Shellabarger.
And the other tangible benefit? A huge annual cost savings. By replacing all of AAPC’s file servers with SecuriSync, Shallabarger estimates the company’s savings on equipment and IT hours to be $200,000, annually.
